Madison-woods.com has a new photo prompt up for Friday Fictioneers today, with 100 word responses due Friday. Do join if you like to write flash fiction; go to her blog for more info. Since I'm flying out Friday, I am jumping the gun and posting early this time. I had written three 100 word pieces for the three Fridays before, each seeming to fit into the same story of perfidy, spying, and conflict. But this week, the prompt took me in a different direction. Would you consider being in an insect's brain science fiction? Here goes:
Development
It feels tight under this rock. I’ve been here a long
time. I need to move around. It’s hard. I’ll rest a while.
Ahh. Okay, now I can move
more. Yes! The house is open, I feel the universe
pulsing, smell flowers and rotting stems, fish, more. If I wiggle really hard, I can explore. Now I’m
outside. I was in that broken box,
how strange. But look at this long
green leaf above my rock. If I let
go, I can float up there and explore.
It’s so beautiful. A
suction, oops, it’s a huge mouth.
Good bye.

When I first saw the prompt photo, all I could think of was a hungry trout! I hope he enjoyed his dinner.
Then came another thought: http://oldentimes.wordpress.com/2012/06/21/friday-fictioneers-metamorphosis/

Whoops! That didn't end well! I'm on the list.
Talk about moving quickly. I've decided that most animals have the mind of a person who's having a manic episode. Poor bug sounds like he met his end too.

I like to imagine the minds of animals but I think it's really not easy and maybe not even possible to know what their thinking is like. But mysteries fascinate me!
cheers,

Lol, a quick cycle of life. At least she sounds quite happily resigned to the end.
I like all the sharp, short sentences.

Every week people wanted to know more, so it was clear none of my stories reached closure. So this week I made sure it did! But I guess it was too much closure for some. Oh, well. Who knows what next week will bring?
Cheers,
Lorelei
Oh dear, freshly minted and gone in seconds ....!

Dear Lorelei,
I had to laugh when I read your last line. (Got there by reading the rest of your fine story quite quickly:) You and I are on the same wavelength this week.
Aloha,
Doug

I love the tone of this, the voice of the damsel fly. Descriptions like "rotting stem...more" were also really nice. Good job!

I think my favorite phrase was feeling the universe pulsing. Ha. So if I'm reading this right, the poor critter barely made it out of nymph-hood before he was eaten!
That really made me laugh, loved the way you looked at it. Great sense of humour. Kudos.

Nice work, expressing the story from the damselfly's voice.

I like how you tell the story through the voice of the damselfly.
